1. Let mud stain dry

The idea of waiting and watching mud dry on your carpet may drive you totally nuts, we get it. However painful it may be, this truly is the best course of action to take with mud. When mud is wet, it is much harder to handle and scrubbing it may only make things worse. When it hardens, mud is much easier to deal with. So, just take a deep breath and let it sit.

2. Scrape and vacuum up as much as you can

Now that the mud has dried, it is time to actually start removing it. But before you get your cleaning supplies, start by scraping off as much of the hardened dirt as you can. At this point, the hardened mud will just be clinging to the fibers and larger patches can be knocked off. Pick up any large chunks and then run your vacuum cleaner over the area to suck up as many dirt particles as possible. Scraping and vacuuming before you actually start cleaning will leave you with less to actually have to take care of.

3. Pick a cleaning method

Now that you’ve removed as many mud chunks and bits and pieces as you can, it’s time to bring out the heavy artillery and pick how you’re going to remove the stain. All of these cleaning methods are effective and are good to use depending on what you have on hand.

No matter what you do, be sure to test it out on a small, inconspicuous area of your carpet first. This way you can make sure it doesn’t cause any damage or discoloration before you go all out the mud stain.

Soap and water

Probably the easiest and most convenient carpet cleaning method for most homeowners. Simply mix about a teaspoon of liquid dish soap for every cup of warm water and blot with a cloth.

Vinegar-based solution

Many people prefer vinegar-based solutions because the natural acidity of vinegar tends to break down dirt. Typically, a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar for every 4 cups of warm water can do the job. Dip a cloth in the solution and blot the area.

Read the instructions and manufacture recommendations of proper use and amount to make sure you get the best results. 

4. Blot, rinse and repeat til it’s gone

After you’ve applied your cleaning solution and allowed it to temporarily sit, rinse the area with cold water and blot with a sponge to soak up excess cleaning supplies and loose dirt. 

It is very important to note the difference between “blot” and “scrub” here too. Blotting is light dabs with the cloth or sponge. Avoid scrubbing the stain because you will likely just drive it deeper into the fibers of your carpet.

Repeat cleaning, rinsing and blotting the area until the stain is no longer visible.

5. Finishing touches

Once the stain is gone, lay some paper towel or a clean cloth over the area to absorb any extra moisture. Give it a good pat after you set it down and let it sit for a couple hours or overnight. Remove the cover and give it one last vacuum for good measure and voila! – good as new!
