Creating a Cohesive Bathroom with Tiles

Recently, we completed a fun tiling project in an Indianapolis home. It was a small, slightly strangely shaped bathroom with a shower right next to a bathtub. The walk-in shower was cut on a bias that left it open. In order to create one continuous space, we’d need to find a way to coordinate the tile on the front of the garden tub with the open shower.

At the same time, we didn’t want to go with a matchy-matchy look. Using one small tile to decorate a bathroom can dazzle the eye and seriously rack up your costs. So instead, we opted for three different tiles designed to complement one another and give a look that was beautiful, modern but with a lot of visual interest.

We started with the mosaic tiles on the front of the bathtub. This slim rectangular mosaic in cream and gray from American Olean are a complex design element that add just the right amount of interest without overwhelming the eye. Following through with the gray in the mosaic, we chose a larger wall tile from Crossville for the rim around the tub and the walls of the shower. The large tiles are cost-effective and clean, especially when coupled with white grout.

The floor was also kept simple with a small tile from Florida Tile in gray that will be easy to

clean and won’t show stains. But in order to tie everything together to create one space, we took the mosaic tile from the front of the tub and added a single sleek stripe down the shower wall. It’s a simple way to bring the two spaces together and create a cohesive look that just works. The length and height of this line makes the oddly shaped shower look bigger than it actually is and gives an illusion of space. The white in the tile lightens the gray and makes the stall seem bright and airy.

When designing in close quarters, remember to choose one impactful tile and use it sparingly. When done smartly, you can see the difference it makes in these before and after pictures. No longer is it two spaces crammed together; it’s one room that works beautifully together.
